From the Rectory
Dear Friends,
It was good to be able to give thanks for the completion of work on the Nave roof recently.
I particularly enjoyed researching material for the sermons on that day. I spent some time reading documents, books and papers that have been kept together by previous Rectors of Turvey and provide a rich source of information not only about the church but also about social life and conditions in the village in times gone by.
On the evening of our Patronal Festival Sunday, I read a sermon preached by the Revd. George Browning on 100th Anniversary of the Commissioning of the ‘New Look’ Church, which took place on 10th October 1854. In that, he gave a wonderful account of all the repairs and alterations that were instigated by Charles Longuet Higgins. He wrote, too, of something that has been in my mind for some time – that together we ‘make’ worship. It is something that we do – and something that has to be done by all of us in Church. It is something active, not something that happens round us or can be done to us or for us, the effort of each person is important.
It is obvious that the choir, the servers, the readers, the leader of a service, those doing the intercessions or welcoming people into church are actively involved, but we all need to be so involved. And we can show our involvement in very small ways – in our singing – how would we get on without the choir? In joining in the prayers in our hearts – and in our responses – Amen ‘So be it’. I find it particularly sad at the end of the great Eucharistic Prayer when I hear only one or two people respond with what should be a great Amen! Maybe it is said thoughtfully and quietly in all hearts – and God will hear - but somehow I want to feel that we are all joined together in our worship at that point.
I suppose it is because I know that we have a wonderful worshipping community in Turvey Church and I want God to hear it loud and clear and to know that we are united in His praise.
Yours in Christ

Giving to Charities
Part of our work as a Church is to support those less well off than ourselves. Each year, the PCC sends some money to a small number of charities, amongst them is the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG) who do an enormous amount of work in some of the most deprived and difficult areas of the world. We are pleased to welcome Mr Martin Heath, on Sunday 6th November, who will preach at the 11.00am Eucharist about the work of the society.
Coffee Morning
Grateful thanks to Doris Burton for hosting the October Coffee Morning, which raised the splendid sum of £346, and to all who went and helped make it such a success. The next Coffee Morning is at The Barton Homes on Saturday 12th November.
Remembrance
November is the month of remembering. Our annual Remembrance Day service is on Sunday 13th November and will begin at 10.40am at the War Memorial, followed by a service in Church. On the evening of that day, at 6.00pm, there will be a Communion Service according to the Book of Common Prayer, during which we will read the list of those whom we loved who have gone before us. If you would like to remember by name someone whom you loved who has died, please will you add their name to the list at the back of the Church.
Bible Study
Details of the Pre-Christmas Bible Study groups to be shared with the congregation and community at Turvey Abbey are at the back of the Church. Please sign up if you can come or contact me for more details
